How Much Time Do I Need to Be in Chicago for LASIK Surgery?

On the day of the procedure, you should plan on being in our office for around 2 hours. This will include time for additional testing and completing the check-in process. You will also meet with Dr. Kraff, who will look over all your measurements, answer any questions you may have, and confirm that surgery is a safe option for you.

The procedure itself is around 30 minutes for both eyes. Immediately following the treatment, a patient will be encouraged to try and sleep as much as possible. With LASIK, you will need to be seen the day after surgery for a quick visit. Following that appointment, patients can resume most of their normal day-to-day activities with few restrictions.

If Dr. Kraff determines that PRK is a safer procedure, a patient should plan on needing to be seen for 1 to 2 visits within a 3 to 4 day period immediately following surgery.

Travel Tips for Out of Town Patients

Having surgery out of town may seem intimidating as you’re trying to plan so many logistical details. It can be overwhelming to navigate these details alone, from figuring out a convenient place to stay to coordinating a ride to and from your appointments. Allow our team to help alleviate your stress with our thoughtful tips below.

  1. Plan as early as possible: As soon as your appointment is scheduled, keep us looped in on your travel plans and whether or not you’ll have someone accompanying you on your trip. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you need help finding a place to stay, a ride, etc.
  2. Bring a friend or loved one: If you’re going out of state for surgery, it’s best not to travel alone. A trusted loved one can help get you to and from your appointment and assist with any aftercare following the appointment.
  3. Arrive early: Rather than arriving on the day of your appointment, we highly recommend getting into the city a day beforehand. This allows you to get plenty of rest, complete any last-minute paperwork, and complete your pre-surgery appointment in a relaxed environment.
  4. Drink lots of water: Hydration is key when you’re traveling, especially right before surgery. Aim to consume at least 2 liters of water daily leading up to your appointment, and you can also mix in electrolytes for added hydration.
  5. Don’t rush traveling home: While we know you want to get back to your normal routine as soon as possible, don’t forget to factor in time to rest and recover after your procedure. Luckily with LASIK, many patients can resume most of their normal day to day activities, including going back to work and driving, within 24 hours. With PRK the downtown is a day or 2 longer so plan accordingly.

Remain in contact with us following the procedure in case you have questions or need assistance. We’re here to help!

I had Lasik surgery with Dr. Kraff in 2001. 17 years later, I am still glad that I did! Now finally after all these years, and needing reading glasses and possible cataract surgery, I am going back to the clinic again. My husband had cataract surgery here on both eyes, and everything went extremely well. I know that there are long wait times sometimes, and it is a pain in the butt to go to Chicago from NW Indiana, but it's worth it to me.
